Everything you need to know about gelcoat 🛥️✨
Over the past few days we have been working intensively on an important topic: applying gelcoat to our beloved Kirana. This project has not only taught us a great deal about boat care, but also shown us once again how important patience and teamwork are. Here we share our knowledge and experience with gelcoat, from its properties to application and maintenance.
What is gelcoat?
Gelcoat is a resin-based coating used primarily to protect and beautify glass-fibre reinforced plastics (GRP). It is mainly used on boats, yachts and other marine craft, but it is also found in the automotive and construction industries. For us aboard Kirana, it is an essential material that keeps our floating home in good shape. 🌊
Properties of gelcoat
Gelcoat has several important properties:
1. Weather resistance ☀️🌧️: Gelcoat offers excellent protection against sun, wind and water. It prevents moisture from penetrating and protects the material underneath from UV radiation, which can damage the resin and fibres. Here on the sunny Croatian coast, that matters enormously to us.
2. Appearance 🎨: Gelcoat gives surfaces a smooth, glossy and attractive finish. It is available in different colours and can be matched to the design and look of the vehicle or object. Kirana simply looks stunning with her new gelcoat!
3. Chemical resistance 🧪: Gelcoat is resistant to many chemicals, which makes it ideal for marine environments where salt water and other substances are always present.
4. Protection 🛡️: It creates a protective barrier that shields the GRP underneath from physical damage such as scratches and wear. That gives us a good feeling of security on our sailing adventures.
Types of gelcoat
There are different types of gelcoat, chosen according to the application and requirements:
1. Standard gelcoat: Used for general applications and offers good protection with an attractive finish.
2. Isophthalic gelcoat: Offers higher chemical resistance and is ideal for applications exposed to stronger chemical influences.
3. Vinylester gelcoat: Offers the highest resistance to osmotic blistering and is ideal for the underwater section of boats. Exactly what we need for Kirana to keep her in top condition. ⚓
Applying gelcoat
Applying gelcoat requires precision and care. These are the basic steps:
1. Preparing the surface 🧼: The surface must be clean, dry and free from contamination. Any uneven areas should be sanded down to create a smooth base. Old layers of gelcoat or paint may need to be removed. Sheila and I did this together while Miro watched us happily. 😄
2. Mixing and applying 🖌️: Gelcoat is usually mixed with a hardener, most often MEKP, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, to trigger curing. The mixture must be thorough and even. Application is usually done with a spray gun or brush, depending on the size and shape of the area being treated. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on mixing ratios and curing times exactly. This was proper teamwork! 🤝
3. Curing ⏳: After application, the gelcoat must cure. Depending on the conditions and materials used, this can take anything from a few hours to several days. During curing, the surface should be protected from dust and moisture. In the meantime, we took care of smaller jobs on Kirana.
4. Finishing 🛠️: Once cured, the surface can be sanded and polished to achieve an even smoother and glossier finish. This is often done with sandpapers of increasingly fine grit, followed by polishing compounds.
Maintaining gelcoat
Proper care is crucial for the durability and appearance of gelcoat. Here are a few maintenance tips:
1. Regular cleaning 🧽: Gelcoat should be cleaned regularly with mild detergents and water to remove dirt, salt and other deposits. Avoid aggressive chemicals that could damage the surface.
2. Polishing and waxing ✨: Regular polishing and waxing keeps the surface glossy and provides extra protection against the elements. Waxing at least twice a year is recommended. For us, it is a welcome opportunity to pamper Kirana a little. 😌
3. Repairs 🔧: Small scratches and chips should be repaired immediately to prevent moisture from getting in and causing greater damage. Special gelcoat repair kits are available and offer a simple way to fix smaller defects.
Common problems and solutions
1. Blistering (osmosis): Blisters under the gelcoat can be caused by moisture entering the GRP. Regular inspection and immediate repair of damage can help prevent osmosis.
2. Cracking: Cracks can occur through mechanical stress or ageing of the material. Smaller cracks can be repaired by sanding and applying fresh gelcoat.
3. Discolouration: Long-term exposure to sunlight can lead to discolouration. Regular waxing and polishing can minimise this.

It not only provides protection, but also creates an attractive surface that can significantly increase the value and lifespan of a vehicle or object.
