Košlijun

An island, in a bay, of an island…

Košlijun lies in the bay of Punat, is almost perfectly round and has a diameter of about 300 metres. There has been a monastery on the island since 1480, built by the Franciscans and still used as a monastery today. And on this tiny island there are actually more than 540 species of plants and fungi…

Inside the monastery you will find a museum with collections of old Roman coins, old local costumes and much more. Until recent years, the original Baška Tablet, the Bašćanska ploča, was also kept in the monastery of Košlijun. Today a one-to-one copy stands in its place, while the original itself is in the Natural History Museum in Zagreb.

The island is open to visitors, and countless taxi boats cross over every day. But remember: it is still a monastery, and as such it has its rules…

Anchoring and landing

There is a small landing pier, but it is suitable only for small boats and dinghies. You can anchor almost anywhere around the island and cross over. But never sail a yacht directly between Prniba and Košlijun… Catamarans may do it regularly, but anything with real draft will not get through there. And even with a catamaran I would be careful. Also remember that throughout the bay of Punat, the water level is strongly influenced by the wind.

By the way: between Košlijun and Prniba you have almost perfect holding ground. No swell, fairly good wind protection, sandy bottom and a perfect depth of 3 to 4 metres. It is also our winter anchorage, where Kirana has now been lying at anchor for quite some time…
